KEITH HARING
ABOUT
Keith Haring (1958–1990) was an American artist and activist who became a central figure in New York City’s street culture of the 1980s. Bridging the gap between the art world and the street, Haring developed a unique visual language defined by bold lines, vivid colors, and kinetic figures like the famous Radiant Baby and Barking Dog.
Haring first gained public attention with his spontaneous chalk drawings on blank advertising panels in the NYC subway system. Driven by his belief that "art is for everybody," he opened the Pop Shop in 1986, making his work accessible to the public through affordable merchandise.
His art was deeply rooted in social activism. Haring used his platform to advocate for nuclear disarmament, anti-apartheid movements, and LGBTQ+ rights. Following his AIDS diagnosis in 1988, he established the Keith Haring Foundation and dedicated his final years to generating activism and awareness about the epidemic. He died in 1990 at the age of 31, leaving behind a legacy of art that champions love, unity, and resilience.
