Huang Yulong is a Beijing-based contemporary sculptor whose practice explores identity through the intersection of Chinese cultural heritage and global urban culture. Drawing on symbols and experiences from both his past and present, his work reflects a generation shaped by China’s rapid cultural transformation and growing exposure to influences from abroad.
Hip-hop has played a central role in Huang Yulong’s life and artistic practice. Introduced to the culture during his teenage years, he was drawn to its freedom, energy and rebellious spirit long before becoming an artist. Rather than separating these influences from his Chinese background, Huang brings them together to develop a distinctive visual language.
His sculptures are best known for their hooded, often faceless figures. By concealing individual identities, Huang shifts attention toward gesture, attitude and presence, using these anonymous characters to explore ideas of identity, belonging and the coexistence of different cultural worlds.
