One Dollar Public Sign (2024) is a sculptural work by French artist Karl Lagasse, transforming the familiar image of the American one-dollar bill into a freestanding aluminium form.
The elongated banknote is curved and distorted, shifting the dollar from a flat printed image into a three-dimensional object. Details from both sides of the currency remain visible across the surface, while the altered shape disrupts one of the world’s most immediately recognizable symbols of money and value.
The dollar has become a recurring motif in Karl Lagasse’s practice, through which he explores ideas of value, exchange and contemporary consumer culture. By enlarging and physically transforming the banknote, the artist gives this everyday object a new sculptural presence.
Executed in aluminium, One Dollar Public Sign was produced in 2024 in an edition of 100.
