Whaam! (1963/1982) translates one of Roy Lichtenstein’s most iconic Pop Art images into a two-part offset lithograph published by the Tate Gallery in London.

Presented as a diptych, the composition transforms the dramatic language of war comics into a monumental confrontation between two panels: a fighter aircraft on the left and an explosive burst of colour and the emphatic “WHAAM!” on the right.

Lichtenstein’s use of bold outlines, flat primary colours and comic-book imagery turns a fleeting moment of action into a highly controlled graphic composition, reflecting his exploration of mass-produced imagery and the visual language of popular culture.

This 1982 edition was published by the Tate Gallery in an edition of 3,000 and consists of two sheets of wove paper. This example is hand-signed by the artist.
