EU Flag (2008) is part of Liu Bolin’s exploration of camouflage, identity and the relationship between the individual and powerful social symbols.

Standing directly in front of the European Union flag, Liu Bolin paints his body and clothing to merge with its blue field and circle of yellow stars. His figure remains visible while simultaneously becoming part of the emblem itself, creating a tension between individual presence and collective identity.

Through this process of physical camouflage, Liu Bolin transforms photography into the final record of a carefully staged performance, using disappearance as a way to examine how individuals position themselves within larger political, cultural and social structures.

Produced in an edition of 4, EU Flag is a striking example of the visual language that has defined Liu Bolin’s practice.
