Gully Presents Klein 17 (2019) is a unique work by French artist Gully, combining appropriation and homage in an imagined encounter with the artistic universe of Yves Klein.
Within a fictional museum interior, Gully recontextualizes recognizable elements associated with Klein’s practice, particularly the intense blue that became inseparable from his work. A spiral staircase structures the composition, surrounded by monochrome surfaces, sculptural forms and traces of pigment.
Appropriation plays a central role in Gully’s practice. By borrowing imagery and visual codes from major figures in art history and relocating them within his own meticulously constructed scenes, he both pays tribute to their work and creates new relationships between familiar references. The museum becomes a fictional space where different artworks, artists and viewers can coexist within a new narrative.
Created in 2019, Gully Presents Klein 17 is a unique mixed-media work on paper mounted on canvas.
