Donald (1986) brings one of popular culture’s most recognizable characters into Andy Warhol’s vivid visual universe.
Donald Duck appears repeatedly across the composition in a sequence of overlapping poses, set against an intense green and blue background. Bright passages of red, orange and pink disrupt the familiar cartoon imagery, transforming the character through the saturated colour and repetition closely associated with Warhol’s Pop Art vocabulary.
The image reflects Warhol’s long-standing fascination with mass media, celebrity and widely circulated cultural icons. By isolating and repeating a familiar cartoon character, the composition blurs the boundaries between commercial imagery and fine art.
Published by the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh in 1986, this color lithograph was produced in an edition of 2,400. It is plate-signed and numbered in pencil by the publisher.
