Valerio Adami is an Italian painter, born in 1935 in Bologna. Trained at the Accademia di Brera in Milan, Adami first gained recognition in the early 1960s for his unique, graphic style combining bold black outlines with areas of flat, vivid color.
His work draws inspiration from Pop Art, Symbolism, and the narrative painting tradition, often depicting scenes filled with allegorical, philosophical, and historical references. Adami’s compositions are structured much like comic book panels, with fragmented spaces and a strong sense of design, inviting viewers to decipher the stories and meanings embedded within each image.
Throughout his career, Adami has explored themes such as politics, literature, mythology, and modern life, weaving visual narratives that blur the boundaries between reality and fiction. He has also been deeply influenced by writers and philosophers, including Jacques Derrida, who wrote about his work.
Today, Valerio Adami is considered one of the leading figures of the Narrative Figuration movement in Europe. His paintings, characterized by their distinctive graphic line and intellectual depth, are held in major public and private collections worldwide and have been exhibited in prestigious museums and galleries across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
